The Value of One

Luke 12: 22-24—Then Jesus said to this disciples: “Therefore I till you do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.  Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.  Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap; they have no storeroom or barn; yet God fees them.  And how much more valuable you are than birds!

Have you ever seen an old, crumpled, soiled, torn one hundred dollar bill?  If you have you know that no matter what shape it is in it still has value.  You can take that beat up old scrap of paper money and go to the grocery store and it will still buy your groceries.

Have you ever considered the fact that that is how God sees us sometimes?  We may not be the best we can be at times but we still have value to Him.  That is because of His unmerited love.  That is what “grace” is.  Unmerited love.

We have an old horse called Kandy.  He is 25 years old and not much to look at.  However, he will carry our grandkids around like a piece of fine china.  To us this old gelding is priceless!  He has no teeth and requires a special diet.  If you could see him you would not believe his molars are all gone because he is so fat!  It is our pleasure to “soup” his feed because to us he has value.  He may not be worth a penny to anyone else in this world but to us there is not enough money to buy him.

Do you know your value to your Father?  Every single one of us is special to God.  Every single one of us has value.  One of the greatest treasures is knowing who you are in Christ and being secure in that knowledge.  You realize that to God you have value.

There are times in everyone’s life that they will feel worthless.  Maybe they made a bad mistake at work and they were not honest about it.  Maybe you are a young person and cheated on a test or gossiped about someone at school and you feel guilty about it.  There are all sorts of things that may make a person feel like they have lost their value.  Especially in God’s eyes.

The good news is you will never loose your value with your heavenly father.  He loves you no matter what.  If you stray He will seek you out and welcome you back.  Remember the story of the Prodigal Son?  He demanded his share of his father’s estate, squandered the entire amount, and things got so bad he was eating with the pigs!  He humbled himself and returned home.  His father saw him coming from far off and ran to him and threw his arms around his neck and welcomed him home.  He even threw a big party for him!  Instead of scolding him and telling him how bad and “worthless” he was he told him how much he loved him.

That is just the way our heavenly Father loves us.  We may loose our way a little or a lot.  No matter.  He welcomes us back.  He is overjoyed when we return to him.  If we humble ourselves before the Lord and approach His throne and ask for forgiveness he doesn’t even hesitate.

He will even come looking for us.  In the parable of the Shepard the Shepard leaves the flock and goes to find the one lost sheep.  Because the one sheep is just as important, has just as much value, as the rest of the flock.

Never doubt your individual value to God.  Never doubt His unending love for just you.  Even if you feel like that old crumpled up piece of money you still have value!
