The Armor Of God

Ephesians 6: 11-18 (NIV)

Put on THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Therefore, PUT ON THE FULL ARMOR OF GOD, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.  Stand firm then, with the BELT OF TRUTH, buckled around your waist, with the BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOSNESS in place, and with your FEET FITTED WITH THE READINESS THAT COMES FROM THE GOSPEL OF PEACE.  In addition to all this, take up THE SHIELD OF FAITH, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Take the HELMET OF SALVATION and the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, WHICH IS THE WORD OF GOD.  And PRAY IN THE SPIRIT ON ALL OCCASIONS WITH ALL KINDS OF PRAYERS AND REQUESTS.  With this in mind, BE ALERT, and always KEEP ON PRAYING for all the Saints.

As Christians, God gives us a ton of ammunition to use against the enemy.  All we have to do is use it!

When I saddle my horse and get ready for competition I want to protect him.  I have a bag full of leg gear but it does no good unless I TAKE IT OUT OF THE BAG AND PUT IT ON HIS LEGS!  It is not going to magically jump out of the bag onto his legs.  I have to put it there.

Every barrel racer knows about shin guards and how important it is to protect your legs.  However, shin guards do not float out of the trailer and follow you around until you put them on.  You have to reach for them and put them on for yourself.

The power given to us by God works the same way.  We need to literally take it out and PUT IT ON.

What  armor does God give us to fight the enemy?

  • The belt of truth: This is symbolic of the clothing of the Messiah--Jesus.  Isaiah 11:5 tells us “Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.”  God is offering us Christ like power against the enemy.
  • The breastplate of righteousness: Isaiah 59:17 states “He put on righteousness as his breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on his head.” The heart and the mind are protected.
  • Feet that are fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace: In Biblical times messengers ran barefooted. Here the person is fitted with protective footgear to be able to react swiftly. Kind of like God’s Nikes. God prepares us to go, or move, when we are called or told to do so.
  • The shield of faith is important. This protects the heart.  In biblical times shields were soaked in water.  Therefore, when they were hit by flaming arrows, the arrows were extinguished.
  • The helmet of salvation protects the mind.
  • The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
  • Pray in the Spirit.
  • Be Alert

All of these things are freely given to us if we will just take them and use them.  If we are to stand firm, as the Apostle Paul tells us to do, we must arm ourselves for battle because the battle will surely come.  The enemy does not give up easy.  But if we are prepared we will win the battles.  And by winning the battles we will win the war!
